Arriving at our new home

While back in Manitoba, we committed to renting a furnished apartment in James Bay for four months.  Since we were signing a lease without seeing the place in person, a short-term rental felt less risky.  If we like the apartment, we can extend our stay up to seven months, but after that we will have to move again.  I love the flexibility of this arrangement.  Once Chris has a job we will have a better idea of our budget, and can choose our next home accordingly.

In the meantime, we seem to have scored a pretty sweet apartment!  Although it is a MUCH smaller space than we are used to, it is on the 17th floor and has large windows that offer an amazing view of Victoria’s Legislative Buildings and Inner Harbour.  From the balcony, if you look west, you can see Juan de Fuca Strait.

The location is ideal.  Our new home is one block away from Beacon Hill Park and about three blocks to the Inner Harbour.  It is a short walk to downtown.  Chris and I are thrilled at the prospect of being able to walk almost every where we want to go!  A more active lifestyle was a main reason we moved to Victoria, and this apartment is definitely conducive to walking.

Another bonus is that our apartment has a large indoor pool, a fitness room, a hot tub, and his and hers saunas.  We used the hot tub the first night we were here.  I swam laps the last two mornings.  Using the pool every day is a routine I could get used to.  We want to make regular use of all the amenities.  We are paying for them in our rent, so we may as well enjoy them!

Speaking of rent, the cost is $1900 per month.  The price includes all utilities, including WiFi and cable.  Unless Chris scores a job as sweet as this apartment, we will not be able to afford it long-term.  Not that living here indefinitely  is even an option.  The risk is that we are spoiling ourselves now and will have to re-adjust to a less desirable home down the road, or move to a less central part of the city.  Oh well, in the meantime we will savour the lifestyle this apartment affords us!

Chris & Teri are a Canadian couple who are embarking on a move from Morden, Manitoba to Victoria, B.C. Although Chris & Teri had a really good life in Manitoba, they were craving adventure, challenge, a milder climate, and a more active and urban lifestyle. So even though it meant giving up steady jobs and moving far away from dear friends and family, they are making the leap across the country to establish a new life together on Vancouver Island.

  1. Hi Teri and Chris,
It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen either of you but I saw your post pop up on Facebook and wanted to say and welcome to the island! We packed up and moved to Nanaimo 8.5 years ago and as much as we miss our family and friends it instantly became home and we love all the island has to offer. I hope you love it as much as we do!!

    1. Hi Leah! I didn’t know you lived on this amazing island! It is always reassuring to hear that people from ‘back home’ have made a successful transition to island living. Other than missing friends and family, I am sure we are going to love it!
